THE TRUCK HAD EARNED extra profits on the days Nate had worked for Vanessa, and they received more customers for the rest of the week. Which made sense after Ava texted her a link to a photo of him stepping out of the driver’s side of the truck. People had probably shown up expecting him to sign their autographs, but since he wasn’t there, they’d had to buy the food.

Either way, he was Vanessa’s for the evening, however long their mini-golf date lasted. The freshly cut grass scented the warm air, and the gentle background music added to the romantic ambience.

Nate was walking toward her with a club, grinding his teeth, and seeming bothered that it had taken him three tries to hit the ball into the hole. He’d rolled up the sleeves of his white button-down shirt, revealing toned forearms. The shirt was tucked into a pair of slim-fitting, dark-wash jeans that hugged his sculpted legs. The polished, brown-leather shoes padding against the putting mat added a sophisticated touch to his outfit.

Her gaze followed the ball as it arced over the pond representing the Bay. Then she scrunched her nose, unimpressed when the golf ball rolled past the hole on the famous island prison. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of pink and orange and casting a warm glow over the amusing course. Being a Monday night on a less popular and somewhat dilapidated course, they had the place to themselves.

“I do have a few tricks up my sleeve,” she said as they crossed the course’s bridge over the pond to the island. Then, with a gentle tap of her mini putter, she guided the ball into the hole before giving a victory dance. The skirt of her jean dress tickled her calves as she waved her club in triumph. She wiggled its steel head at him. “But don’t worry. I’ll go easy on you.”

“Thanks. I appreciate that.” His blue eyes sparkled in the dusky light. Laughing a deep belly laugh that warmed her to the core, he put a hand on her lower back and guided her to the next hole, this one designed to match the Golden Gate Bridge.

She putted across the bridge, her ball rolling near the hole. She wanted to know so many things about him,
